Chania

In the western part of Crete is the prefecture of Chania , with its gorges , lakes , caves, White Mountains , the wonderful beaches and countless picturesque villages. Place rich in history and many archaeological sites that impress visitors . Chania is the capital of the prefecture . The city has an important historical background and cultural heritage , mainly because of friction with different cultures . The Minoan Chania mingle with archaioelladika and later Roman and Byzantine . Later , the Venetian Period enriched throughout the region with monuments , churches and attractions , like the subsequent Turkish sovereignty .

The Samaria Gorge, one of the major tourist attractions, with a length of 18 kilometers, is perhaps the largest in Europe. The crossing of the "Samaria" is a unique and compelling experience.

On the shores of the Libyan Sea and within walking distance of the Samaria Gorge is Agia Roumeli. It is a coastal village in southwestern Crete and is built in the ancient city of Taras, a major independent city which flourished mainly in Roman times. Agia Roumeli is not accessible by road and the only ways to get to here is either on foot or on one of the boats operate daily from Paleochora, Sougia and Sfakia.

Elafonisi and Balos are two monuments of immense beauty of nature. Elafonisi is an oblong Chersonese , which gives the sense of a separate island . The famous lagoon of Balos is located about 17km northwest of Kissamos . Balos is a shallow sandy beach formed at the Cape of Gramvousas and is certainly the most photographed beach in Crete . It is famous for its exotic white , aquamarine and turquoise waters, the wild natural beauty and wonderful exotic landscape . In many places the sand has a lovely pink color , derived from millions of broken shells . Both Elafonisi and Balos are introduced in protected areas Natura, with rare species of flora and fauna .
